English for Speakers of Other Languages
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program of A Faith That Does Justice (AFTDJ) serves adult learners in vulnerable populations in Boston. We offer ESOL training to those who have recently arrived in the U. S. and who need better language and social interaction skills to obtain employment and to live successfully in this country.
Initially, the program will focus on speakers whose English language skills are at the beginning level. AFTDJ volunteers will teach English in classes, with 10 students each, which meet for 2 hours, 3 days or evenings per week for 5 weeks. At the end of each 5-week block of classes, we expect students to have developed their English skills sufficiently to enable them to progress to the next level of instruction in English language proficiency.
During the first program year, we envision teaching 7 to 9, 5-week blocks of classes. Depending on demand, multiple classes of up to 10 students may be held in each block. As the program develops, we will expand class opportunities to Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Classes are being held at St. Anthony Shrine, 100 Arch Street, Boston MA, which is conveniently located near Downtown Crossing and easily accessible to public transportation.
